Squarespace vs. Shopify: Which Should You Choose?

Shopify and Squarespace are both popular platforms for hosting eCommerce websites. At Renaissance Labs, we have designed and launched websites using both platforms (and WordPress but we will save that for another article). Both Squarespace and Shopify platforms offer a range of features and tools to help you create an online store, including the ability to manage products, process payments, and handle shipping and taxes. Here are some key differences between the two platforms:

  • Ease of use: Squarespace is generally considered to be more user-friendly than Shopify, especially for those who are new to website building. Squarespace is very drag-and-drop and pretty straightforward. Shopify has a steeper learning curve, but it also offers more advanced features and customization options. Which theme you select in Shopify will matter a lot.

  • Templates and design: Squarespace offers a wide range of templates and design options that allow you to create a visually appealing website with minimal effort. Shopify also offers a selection of templates, but they may be less flexible in terms of design customization. Many brands choose to pay up for third-party Shopify themes that have more built-in features which add to the cost of the online store.

  • Ecommerce features: Both Shopify and Squarespace offer a range of eCommerce features, including the ability to manage products, process payments (that’s the shopping cart), and handle shipping and taxes. However, Shopify is generally considered to be more robust in terms of eCommerce functionality, with more advanced features such as abandoned cart recovery and support for multiple languages and currencies.

  • Pricing: Both Shopify and Squarespace offer various pricing plans to suit different needs. Shopify's plans start at $29 per month, while Squarespace's plans start at $18 per month. Both offer discounts for new accounts so be on the lookout. However, Shopify's plans include more advanced eCommerce features, so you may need to pay more for access to certain features. Also as mentioned above you may need a 3rd party theme that can cost several hundred dollars.

Ultimately, the choice between Shopify and Squarespace will depend on your specific needs and budget. Are looking for a platform that is easy to use and offers a range of design options, Squarespace may be a good choice. If you need more advanced eCommerce features and customization options, Shopify may be a better fit. It's a good idea to compare the features and pricing of both platforms to determine which one is the best fit for your business. At Renaissance Labs we can help you create your dream website on either platform. Get in touch and let’s partner.
